Peacebuilding, Community Security and Access to Justice

Peacebuilding,-Community-Security-and-Access-to-Justice CEDAR

Peace remains the key factor in ensuring development and economic growth in South Sudan. After Independence in 2011, the country was challenged to develop from scratch, but tribal feuds at different part of the country and the emergence of a major war in 2013 has kept the country lagging behind in terms of development. Peacebuilding and conflict resolution is one of the main priority areas of CEDAR. The organization’s peace and reconciliation activities are based on people-to-people processes where communities come together to discuss their issues and find solutions to them. CEDAR creates space for communities where they are able to express their grievances as a way forward for forgiveness, healing and reconciliation. The process aims at defining home-grown initiatives that binds communities together and help build trust among them.

Collaborative approach to conflicts enhances community safety and security. In order to ensure collaborative approach to community security, CEDAR works closely with key local stakeholders in the communities to establish structures such as Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Women Peace Network (WPN), to advocate and lobby local authorities and security actors to address community security concerns in real time before they escalate to unmanageable violent levels.

CEDAR empowers communities, partnering with local stakeholders to build structures like PCRC and WPN, ensuring proactive measures for real-time resolution of security concerns.

With the recuring violent conflicts, and the deteriorating economic situation, the plight of justice systems is very challenging for the common citizens, and even more difficult for the vulnerable people like women (including girls), persons with special needs, displaced communities and returnees. CEDAR promotes access to justice for the vulnerable people as well as strengthening their access to information on legal and human rights.
